SEO (search engine optimization) is a key factor is the amount of traffic you are receiving to your website and/or blog. Have you ever googled specific keywords to see where your website lands? For example if you are a wedding photographer in Los Angeles, Google “Los Angeles Wedding Photographer” and see if your website pops up. Ideally, your website will be within page 1 of the Google results. Page 2? Page 3? As you know, the further down in the Google search results, the less likely that people will be able to find your website. Fewer visitors means fewer potential clients. Here are some quick SEO tips to push your website to page 1 of search engines:
1. Content is Key!
Make sure your content is relevant, unique, and written well. Your content should also be packed with keywords that people will use in search engines.
2. Use Links
Use your keywords and keyword phrases as links to other relevant content. Content within your website and/or blog and also content across the internet.
3. Create Fresh Content
New and constantly updated content can help to improve your rankings. Make sure you are adding new content regularly. If you have a website with content that doesn’t change much, I suggest starting a blog with at least weekly updates.
4. Ditch the Welcome Page
Yes, welcome pages with an image or logo look pretty, but they are not necessarily helping your rankings. Ideally, your homepage will be packed with keywords that search engines will pick up.
5. Ask Your Web Designer
If you are hiring a web designer to create your site, make sure they understand SEO and are actively designing your website with SEO in mind.
6. Get Linked
Network and outreach to similar websites and/or blogs with high traffic and try to get them to link to you website and/or your images.
7. Create Captions
Make sure you have captions with your images. Keyword rich captions are just another great way for search engines to pick up your content.
8. Use Social Media
Having active social media accounts with content linking back to your website not only keeps your branding on point, but also creates more content for search engines. See our tips for Optimizing Your Facebook and Twitter.
9. Include a Sitemap
A sitemap is essentially a page within your site that outlines the entire content of your website – with links. Here’s an example of a sitemap on Apple.
10. Get Viral
SEO is not just about blue links. Include video, podcasts, social media and so forth to broaden your searchable range.
