When starting out, many people face a very simple question. What should my posts be about? I am a firm believer that you should post about the things you love and the things that are interesting to you. This way, you build an online community of genuine enthusiasts who share the same interests as you. However, there are a few suggestions I can offer to improve user engagement and to keep your content interesting.
1. Post Photos
Posts including photography and video get the most user engagement. It is undeniable that people like to see pretty things, not just read about them. So post photographs and video often. Many photographers are cautions about posting their work on Facebook due to their (according to some) controversial terms & conditions. Make sure you are familiar with the T&C’s of any social media network that you are sharing your work through. If this is a concern, you can always provide low-res, watermarked images or links to photographic content. This is just as effective. Find out which strategy works best for you and that you feel most comfortable with.
2. Ask Questions
People log-on to social media to stay connected but also to be entertained. So entertain them! To encourage user engagement ask your audience questions, request their feedback and opinions. These questions don’t always have to relate to you. They can be general questions about the industry, current events, hypotheticals or drawn from an article your post links to. Get people thinking and talking. Entertain them, make them laugh, be provocative. Use your own voice and talk to them like they are 2,000 of your closest friends.
3. Post Often
You can read more about this in our previous post on Optimizing Your Facebook and Twitter Accounts. The short version is, post often. Any social media account that has been dormant for 2-3 days is no good. People will forgot about you and it gives the impression that you are unavailable.
4. Giveaways & Promotions
This is one of the fastest ways to engage users and build followers. People love to win stuff. It’s that simple. And the easer it is to enter, the better. You can run a special discount or giveaway through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other social media outlet. It creates buzz and excitement. Create a hashtag (#) specific to your event that you can track and promote, promote, promote! If you create a unique hashtag, then people can enter through various social media outlets: YouTube, Twitter, Instagram. It gives them options. Be sure to check out Facebook’s promotional guidelines if you decide to run the giveaway on Facebook.
