By now we have all heard the news that Facebook has officially implemented the clickable hashtag. For those who don’t know, a hashtag is any word with a “#” in front of it. For example, if I hashtag #photography in a Twitter post, any user can click on the hashtag to see all other related conversations posted with the hashtag #photography. Twitter and Instagram have always been on board with the hashtag craze, allowing users to track conversations and user engagement.
What does this mean for you? As an artist/photographer, you can now implement hashtags on Facebook, reaching a MUCH broader audience. With over a billion users, hashtags on Facebook has expanded our access to track conversations and connect us to users around specific content.
Here are some tips on how to make the most of hashtags:
- Start a Conversation: Create a unique hashtag for an exhibition, an event, or even a specific project. Make sure you include the hashtag on any branding and marketing and encourage users to include it in their posts. Not only will you be able to easily track the conversation you started, but you will also be able to gauge interest, feedback, and find new followers.
- Find Potential Customers: Depending on what your niche is, you can search hashtags to find potential customers. For example, search #WeddingPhotographer and see what conversations are out there. You may find general conversations on the topic, but you may also find users looking for guidance, information or even looking to hire.
- Categorize Your Posts: Using one to two hashtags in your posts will ensure that you stay relevant and engaged in the conversation. It’s a great way to find other users with similar interests and grow your following.
- Trending Topics: Pay attention to hashtags that are “trending”. These are hashtags that are getting the most use and drawing the most conversations. Find ways to weave these trending hashtags into your own posts to join in the conversation and build followers.
